Doula Support May Be Covered

Understand the benefit and check your own coverage. Coverage rules change, so confirm every detail with your plan.

Does Apple Health Cover a Doula?

Yes, for eligible members. Apple Health is Washington's Medicaid program. Eligible members can use the services of a qualifying birth doula who is enrolled with the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA).

What the Benefit Includes

  • One in-person prenatal intake visit
  • Continuous in-person support during labor and delivery
  • Up to 20 total hours of additional prenatal and postpartum visits, including a comprehensive postpartum visit

The 20 Hours Are Shared

The 20 hours are one combined allowance for prenatal and postpartum visits, not 20 hours for each.

Choose an Enrolled Doula

The doula must be certified by Washington's Department of Health and enrolled with HCA. Ask the doula to confirm they take Apple Health. Contact HCA or your plan about your own benefit.

Does TRICARE Cover a Doula?

Yes, for eligible members planning a birth outside a military hospital. Eligible TRICARE members can use the Childbirth and Breastfeeding Support Demonstration with a qualifying participating doula.

Who Qualifies

  • Members on TRICARE Prime, Prime Remote or Select
  • At least 20 weeks pregnant
  • Planning to give birth outside a military hospital or clinic
  • Using a TRICARE-authorized birth provider and a participating doula

The Birth Doula Benefit

The benefit covers up to six total hours of visits before or after birth, plus one untimed visit for support during the birth. It is not six hours for each period. It does not cover unlimited overnight postpartum care.

Planning a Birth at Madigan?

Planned births at military hospitals are not covered by this doula demonstration. If you arrange a doula privately, confirm Madigan's current access policy separately.

Check Referrals and Costs

Prime members need a referral from their primary care manager for a non-network provider. Point-of-service costs may apply without one. Virtual doula services are not covered. You can reach TriWest at 888-874-9378.

Facility Fees at The Birthing Inn

The Birthing Inn is one of the few standalone birth centers in the region with TRICARE certification. Please check your facility benefits and any required authorizations directly with TriWest.

Will My Private Insurance or Employer Cover a Doula?

It depends on your plan. Benefits differ by plan and by employer, so check the exact service before you sign an agreement with a doula.

Have Your Provider's Details Ready

Ask the doula for an accurate description of the service, the fees and any paperwork before you check your benefits. A provider's ability to issue an invoice is not a guarantee of reimbursement.

Ask Your Plan or Benefits Administrator

  • Is this specific service eligible?
  • Does the provider need approval or particular credentials?
  • Is payment made directly, or do I submit for reimbursement?
  • What limits or deadlines apply?
  • Are postpartum care and lactation support treated differently?
